Finding your Freedom

To be truly free you must do whatever you want to do.

To do what you want to do, you must firstly know what it is that you really want.

It was December 1997 and we arrived to the City that never sleeps, excited to be living the experience. There was no way we would be just another couple of Mexican expats living in the “taco” towers in midtown, we wanted to truly live the experience and ended-up in a lovely brownstone in the Upper West Side, on W80th with Riverside Drive.

So it was the first time we were by ourselves, absolutely free, no commitments, nothing to do, except to be with ourselves and each other. We had all the time we needed to do whatever we wanted. Now it was a question of finding out what was that?

We learned that it serves no purpose being “free” for the sake of being "free", if we did not know what was it that we wanted.

Our self-exploration began.

Was it reading? Was it walking in the park? Was it listening to music? Was it a museum? Was it Opera? Was it classical music? Was it a musical? Was it a play? Was it working? Was it a restaurant, in which case, what kind of food? Was it a sport, in which case, was it baseball, was it football? Was it a tv series, a movie? Was it by ourselves? Was it with friends? Was it with family?

What was it that we really wanted?

To know what we wanted, we realised that there were a number of things we had not tried and did not really know whether we liked them or not.

So firstly, we needed to try a little bit of everything, at least once. Our parents where right, it was just as with food. You must try everything at least once to then be able to say if you like it or not.

So there we went. We allowed to explore and let ourselves get lost, listening to no one, to learn about ourselves, about each other, to learn how we could be ourselves while being together.

Now is a good time to prepare ourselves to be free, by first knowing what it is that we really want. The first step toward exploring your new acquired freedom.

Once you know what it is that you want, get ready to reclaim it and live it, to be yourself.

And remember that it is not about doing anything, it is time for contemplation, for exploration, for letting yourself get lost, listening to yourself, getting ready to be everything, without doing nothing.
