Fear and Control: Just Let Go

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

What is it that we are really afraid of?

If I want, I can imagine so many terrible things that may or may not happen to me, to my family, to people I love and care about, to people I do not know and care about.

However, that is only the product of my imagination on what may or may not happen in the future and yes, there will be terrible things that will happen to a myriad of people. Actually, it has happened every single day since the dawns of time, and guess what? There is nothing you can do about it. It is beyond your control.

We love to control everything, don't we? We love to live under the illusion that we have things under control; and today we realise that we cannot even plan what we will be doing next week, because we have no idea what may or may not happen in the next 24 hours. This has happened individually to everyone at a certain given point in time, but never to so many people simultaneously.

Curiously enough, our lives have become more real, that is, more attuned with reality, as uncertain as they have always been. And yes, that may be scary, or not.

The more uncertain your live is, the more real it has become, and the more fulfilling it will be.

The illusion that you were in control and that there was certainty in your live might have been comforting to you and many others that depend on your wanting to preserve that certainty and control over everything else. In the end, what you were trading is the possibility of living your live freely.

The current state of affairs has released you and is giving you the opportunity to live again your live in absolute freedom, as long as you are willing to let go and deal with the absolute uncertainty it entails, fascinating, isn't it?

There are some that are desperate to go back to "normal" and regain control, be able to plan their Christmas vacations as if nothing happened. I wish that does not happen, and I believe it will not.

You cannot control things in the manner you think you want, but you can certainly let go to live in the here and now, and that practically does the trick of being in absolute control of your live.

The only condition to being able to do it, is that you are willing to live whatever live has there to offer you, letting go any preferences, which reminds me to the teachings in the first line of the poem "Hsin Hsin Ming" from Sen Ts'an, the Third Chinese Patriarch of Zen:

"The Great Way is no difficult to those that have no preferences"

So, what is it that you want? Is it control and fear? Is it freedom and uncertainty?

Surrender to the will of what is and will be.

We believe it
